Common Causes and Symptoms
Sporting Hip
Commonly occurs in athletes participating in running, jumping, or cutting sports. Repetitive high-impact activities can strain hip structures. Poor training techniques and inadequate warm-up contribute to injury risk. Muscle imbalances around the hip joint increase vulnerability.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain during activity
- Reduced performance
- Limited hip mobility
- Muscle tightness
Gluteal Tendinopathy
Often develops from overuse in running or walking activities, especially on hills or uneven surfaces. Prolonged sitting and poor hip muscle strength contribute to tendon stress. Age-related tendon degeneration and biomechanical issues like leg length differences increase risk.
Signs and Symptoms
- Hip pain when walking
- Pain lying on side
- Tenderness over hip
- Pain climbing stairs
Hip Micro Instability
Hip microinstability, common among athletes, occurs due to excessive movement of the femoral head within the acetabulum due to capsuloligamentous laxity, labral compromise, or muscular imbalance. It often leads to pain, functional limitation, and progressive joint overload.
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain during twisting and pivoting motions,
- Difficulty in single-leg loading
- Deep groin or anterior hip pain
- Clicking, snapping sensation in the hip
Hip Impingement
Primarily caused by structural abnormalities in hip joint anatomy, often present from birth or developing during growth. High-impact sports and activities requiring extreme hip movements can accelerate symptom onset. Repetitive hip flexion movements, especially in athletes, can lead to labral tears.
Signs and Symptoms
- Groin pain with movement
- Stiffness after sitting
- Clicking in hip joint
- Limited hip flexibility
