Common Causes and Symptoms
Posture related neck pain
Posture-related neck pain can arise from poor posture, extended screen time, and muscle imbalances. Weakness in the deep neck muscles, overactivity of larger muscles, and reduced neck muscle endurance often lead to discomfort and pain after prolonged periods of sustained activity or desk work.
Signs and Symptoms
- Neck Pain or Stiffness
- Shoulder and Upper Back Pain
- Fatigue
- Headache
Chronic neck pain
Chronic neck pain often develops from an inadequately managed initial episode of neck pain. Contributing factors include impaired neck muscle motor control, prolonged poor posture, stress-related muscle tension, and age-related degenerative changes in the cervical spine. Over time, these issues can lead to persistent discomfort and reduced neck function.
Signs and Symptoms
- Persistent neck stiffness
- Headaches
- Limited neck mobility
- Upper back / neck Muscle tension
Neck pain with radiating pain
Often stems from nerve compression in the cervical spine due to herniated discs or bone spurs. Poor posture, especially during prolonged desk work, can accelerate disc degeneration. Trauma from whiplash injuries and age-related degenerative changes contribute significantly.
Signs and Symptoms
- Arm pain or numbness
- Weakness in hands
- Tingling sensations
- Neck stiffness
Work Related Thoracic Pain
Develops from poor posture during prolonged desk work or repetitive upper body movements. Ergonomic issues like improper monitor height and keyboard position contribute significantly. Stress-related muscle tension and lack of movement breaks worsen symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms
- Upper back stiffness
- Shoulder blade pain
- Muscle tightness
- Pain worsening during work
